The Oscars

It’s almost time for the 88th Academy Awards to make their return onto our screens and we couldn’t be more excited!  This years Oscars hosted by the one and only Chris Rock (and lots of other famous faces) are being held Sunday, February 28.

The nominations, which were announced on Thursday, January 4, show that The Revenant (starring Leonardo DiCaprio) is topping the leader board with 12 nominations. Closely followed by Mad Max: Fury Road, nominated for 10 awards. Both films have been nominated for best picture.

Eddie Redmayne stands alongside DiCaprio in the category for Best Actor for his role in The Danish Girl. This is Redmayne’s second nomination following his success at the 2014 Academy Awards where he won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Theory of Everything) DiCaprio has previously been nominated four times but has yet to win.

The Actress in a Leading Role Category is lined with lots of well known talent, Brie Larson, Room, Jennifer Lawrence, Joy, Cate Blanchett, Carol, Saorise Ronan, Brooklyn and Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years.

This years nominations have caused a storm on social media due to the lack of diversity within the nominees; more than 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pick the nominees. Statistics show that the majority of the committee are white males, over the age of 50. Spike Lee and Jake Pinkett Smith were first to announce that they would be boycotting this years Academy Awards along with many other celebs. Do you think that The Oscars lack diversity?

With categories covering all aspects of the film industry The Oscars really do have something for everyone, whether you watch them for the ceremony, the after show or just to see who’s wearing what on the red carpet, it will definitely be a night to remember.
